16 April 2025

The ZooKeys editorial team welcomes Croatian pygmy grasshopper expert Josip Skejo as its newest subject editor for Orthoptera.

Josip Skejo is a 32-years-old biologist from Croatia with an extensive international experience. He studied fieldwork methods and taxonomy under the mentorship of Professor Nikola Tvrtković, a renowned Croatian zoologist. His scientific research focuses on the biodiversity and evolution of grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera), with an emphasis on pygmy grasshoppers in tropical regions (Tetrigoidea, Tetrigidae), but he is also involved in early eukaryotic evolution studies. His main interests include the phylogeny, taxonomy, biogeography, and functional morphology of pygmy grasshoppers—and especially the integration of these fields. He has published more than 40 scientific papers on Tetrigidae and described over 100 extant and fossil pygmy grasshopper taxa from around the world. A full list of his publications is available on his Google Scholar profile.

Skejo currently works as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Croatia, where he teaches courses in Evolution, Molecular Evolution, and Fieldwork. He is an active member of the IUCN SSC Grasshopper Specialist Group and of the Orthopterists’ Society.
