11 March 2025

Dr. Nesrine Akkari, a subject editor at ZooKeys, has been elected as a commissioner of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), filling one of the eight vacancies after elections on 17 February 2025.

Founded in 1895, the ICZN is responsible for maintaining a consistent and universally accepted system for naming animals by providing and regulating a uniform system of zoological nomenclature ensuring that every animal has a unique and universally accepted scientific name.

Dr. Akkari is a curator of the Myriapoda collection and a staff scientist at the Natural History Museum Vienna. Her research focuses on the biosystematics, phylogeny, and evolution of Myriapoda, including millipedes and centipedes. She has authored numerous publications in ZooKeys, contributing significantly to our understanding of myriapod taxonomy and related fields.

As a newly-elected ICZN commissioner, Dr. Akkari stated: “I am truly honoured by the nomination and election as a new ICZN commissioner. I am eager to expand my knowledge in zoological nomenclature and to contribute to the activities of the commission. These remain highly important to our community of taxonomists, especially with the continuous flow of new endeavours and modern approaches in the field.”

The ZooKeys team congratulates Dr. Akkari and the seven other newly-elected commissioners and wishes them success in their important work.
