DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.830.32463

Authors: Zachary Lahey, Lubomír Masner, Norman F. Johnson

Abstract: Calixomeria lasallei gen. n. et sp. n. is described as a new genus and species of Sceliotrachelinae. Calixomeria most closely resembles genera of the Aphanomerus-cluster but possesses several characters that readily separate it from other sceliotracheline genera. The key of Masner and Huggert (1989) is modified to accommodate Calixomeria, and the relationship of the genus to other members of the subfamily is discussed.

The genus Macroteleia Westwood in Middle Miocene amber from Peru (Hymenoptera, Platygastridae s.l., Scelioninae) https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/3962/ ZooKeys 426: 119-127

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.426.7822

Authors: Vincent Perrichot, Rodolfo Salas-Gismondi, John Flynn, Pierre-Olivier Antoine, Michael Engel

Abstract: A new species of the scelionine genus Macroteleia Westwood (Platygastridae s.l., Scelioninae) is described and figured from a female beautifully preserved in middle Miocene amber from Peru. Macroteleia yaguarum Perrichot & Engel, sp. n., shows a unique combination of characters otherwise seen independently within its congeners. It is most similar to the modern M. surfacei Brues, but differs from it by the non-foveolate notauli, the contiguous punctures of the vertex, and the continuous propodeum. The new species is the first New World fossil of the genus, suggesting a Cretaceous origin for the group and a relatively old age of the South American, tropical African, and Australian faunas, and a younger age of the modern Holarctic faunas.

Monograph of the Afrotropical species of Scelio Latreille (Hymenoptera, Platygastridae), egg parasitoids of acridid grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Acrididae) https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/3350/ ZooKeys 380: 1-188

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.380.5755

Authors: Matthew Yoder, Alejandro Valerio, Andrew Polaszek, Simon van Noort, Lubomir Masner, Norman Johnson

Abstract: The genus Scelio is a cosmopolitan and speciose group of solitary parasitoids of the eggs of short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). A number of these hosts are important pests, including plague locusts of the genus Schistocerca. Species of Scelio are recognized as potentially important biological control agents, but this possibility has yet to be fully realized, in part because the species-level taxonomy is still incompletely developed. The species of the pulchripennis group have been recently revised. As a continuation of this effort, here we revise the Afrotropical species of Scelio, excluding the pulchripennis species group. Sixty two (62) species are treated, 48 of which are new. Species are classified into the following species groups: ernstii (12 species, 9 new), howardi (23 species, 19 new), ipomeae (6 species, 5 new), irwini (4 species, 3 new), simoni (3 new species) and walkeri (12 species, 9 new). Keys to species groups and to the species within each group are provided. New species described are: S. albatus Yoder, sp. n., S. aphares Yoder, sp. n., S. apospastos Yoder, sp. n., S. ardelio Yoder, sp. n., S. aurantium Yoder, sp. n., S. balo Valerio & Yoder, sp. n., S. bayanga Yoder, sp. n., S. bubulo Yoder, sp. n., S. cano Yoder, sp. n., S. clypeatus Yoder, sp. n., S. concavus Yoder, sp. n., S. copelandi Yoder, sp. n., S. crepo Yoder, sp. n., S. destico Yoder, sp. n., S. dupondi Yoder, sp. n., S. effervesco Yoder, sp. n., S. erugatus Yoder, sp. n., S. exophthalmus Yoder, sp. n., S. fremo Valerio & Yoder, sp. n., S. gemo Yoder, sp. n., S. grunnio Yoder, sp. n., S. harinhalai Yoder, sp. n., S. igland Yoder, sp. n., S. impostor Yoder, sp. n., S. irwini Yoder, sp. n., S. janseni Yoder, sp. n., S. latro Yoder, sp. n., S. memorabilis Yoder, sp. n., S. modulus Yoder, sp. n., S. mutio Yoder, sp. n., S. ntchisii Yoder, sp. n., S. parkeri Yoder, sp. n., S. phaeoprora Yoder, sp. n., S. pilosilatus Yoder, sp. n., S. pipilo Yoder, sp. n., S. quasiclypeatus Yoder, sp. n., S. retifrons Yoder, sp. n., S. ructo Yoder, sp. n., S. scomma Yoder, sp. n., S. simoni Yoder, sp. n., S. simonolus Yoder, sp. n., S. somaliensis Yoder, sp. n., S. susurro Yoder, sp. n., S. tono Yoder, sp. n., S. transtrum Yoder, sp. n., S. tritus Yoder, sp. n., S. ululo Yoder, sp. n., S. vannoorti Valerio & Yoder, sp. n. The following species are redescribed: S. afer Kieffer, S. chapmani Nixon, S. howardi Crawford, S. ipomeae Risbec, stat. n., S. mauritanicus Risbec, S. philippinensis Ashmead, S. remaudierei Ferrière, S. striatus Priesner, S. taylori Nixon, and S. zolotarevskyi Ferrière. The genus Lepidoscelio Kieffer is treated as a junior synonym of Scelio Latreille, syn. n.; its type species, Lepidoscelio fuscipennis Kieffer, 1905 is transferred to Scelio, renamed Scelio obscuripennis Johnson, nom. n. (preoccupied by Scelio fuscipennis Ashmead, 1887), and redescribed. The following additional species are transferred from Lepidoscelio to Scelio: S. cayennensis (Risbec), comb. n., S. insularis Ashmead, rev. comb., S. luteus (Cameron), comb. n., S. thoracicus Ashmead, rev. comb. Lectotypes are designated for S. africanus Risbec, S. ipomeae Risbec, S. mauritanicus Risbec, S. remaudierei Ferrière, S. sudanensis Ferrière, and S. zolotarevskyi Ferrière. Scelio gaudens Nixon is a junior synonym of Scelio striatus Priesner, syn. n.; Scelio africanus Risbec and Scelio clarus Fouts are both junior synonyms of Scelio afer Kieffer, syn. n.; Scelio sudanensis Ferrière and Scelio cheops Nixon are both junior synonyms of Scelio zolotarevskyi Ferrière, syn. n.; Scelio cahirensis Priesner is a junior synonym of Scelio mauritanicus Risbec, syn. n. The name Scelio chapmanni Nixon is an incorrect original spelling, requiring an emendation to S. chapmani. Abstract: The endemic Australian parasitic wasp genus Bracalba (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is revised. Sixteen species are recognized: B. cuneata Dodd, B. laminata Dodd and B. nigrescens (Dodd) are redescribed and thirteen new species are recognized; B. clavata Burks, sp. n., B. globosa Burks, sp. n., B. hesperia Burks, sp. n., B. intermedia Burks, sp. n., B. magnirubra Burks, sp. n., B. parvirubra Burks, sp. n., B. pinnula Burks, sp. n., B. plana Burks, sp. n., B. propodealis Burks, sp. n., B. sculptifrons Burks, sp. n., B. sparsa Burks, sp. n., B. tricorata Burks, sp. n., and B. tridentata Burks, sp. n. The genus is found continent-wide but mostly south of the Tropic of Capricorn, and with the highest species diversity occurring in the Pilbara and south-western regions of Western Australia. The hosts of Bracalba are unknown but specimens reared from eggs confirm that the genus is associated with orthopteran hosts. A preliminary phylogeny of species did not indicate that species groups were monophyletic, but they are retained despite paraphyly because they are convenient for specimen identification.

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.50.485

Authors: Charuwat Taekul, Norman Johnson, Lubomir Masner, Andrew Polaszek, Rajmohana K.

Abstract: The genus Platyscelio Kieffer (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae, Scelioninae) is a widespread group in the Old World, found from West Africa to northern Queensland, Australia. The species concepts are revised and a key to world species is presented. The genus is comprised of 6 species, including 2 known species which are redescribed: Platyscelio africanus Risbec (Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Yemen, Zimbabwe); and Platyscelio pulchricornis Kieffer (Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Taiwan, Thailand, Vanuatu, Vietnam). Five species-group names are considered to be junior synonyms of Platyscelio pulchricornis: Platyscelio abnormis Crawford, syn. n., Platyscelio dunensis Mukerjee, syn. n., Platyscelio mirabilis Dodd, syn. n., Platyscelio punctatus Kieffer, syn. n., and Platyscelio wilcoxi Fullaway. The following species are hypothesized and described as new taxa: Platyscelio arcuatus Taekul & Johnson, sp. n. (Western Australia); Platyscelio mysterium Taekul & Johnson, sp. n. (Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa); Platyscelio mzantsi Taekul & Johnson, sp. n. (South Africa); and Platyscelio striga Taekul & Johnson, sp. n. (Western Australia).

Masnerium wellsae gen. n., sp. n. (Hymenoptera, Platygastridae, Sceliotrachelinae) a parasitoid of Aleuroduplidens wellsae Martin (Hemiptera, Aleyrodidae) in Australia https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/2042/ ZooKeys 20: 119-125

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.20.189

Authors: Andrew Polaszek

Abstract: Masnerium wellsae Polaszek, gen. n., sp. n. is described from Merbein, Victoria, Australia. It is a primary endoparasitoid of the whitefly Aleuroduplidens wellsae Martin, described from the same type locality with identical collection data. Masnerium is most closely related to the genera Aleyroctonus Masner & Huggert, and Aphanomerus Perkins, but differs from both these genera in several morphological characters that are of primary importance at genus level in the Sceliotrachelinae.

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.20.205

Authors: Matthew Yoder, Andrew Polaszek, Lubomir Masner, Norman Johnson, Alejandro Valerio

Abstract: The charismatic pulchripennis-group of Scelio Latreille is revised and 18 species are treated. The species group is described and diagnosed. Eight new species are described: S. clarkei Yoder, sp. n. (India, Sri Lanka); S. ememeye Yoder, sp. n. (Sri Lanka, Nepal); S. leipo Yoder, sp. n. (Madagascar); S. parapulchripennis Yoder, sp. n. (Madagascar); S. masneri Yoder, sp. n. (Botswana, South Africa); S. paranitens Yoder, sp. n. (Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe); S. tria, Yoder & Masner, sp. n. (India); and S. turbidus Yoder, sp. n. (Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania). Scelio princeps Nixon is treated as a junior synonym of S. poecilopterus Priesner (syn. n.). Scelio variegatus Kozlov & Kononova is removed from synonymy with S. poecilopterus Priesner and treated as a valid species (stat. n.). Lectotypes are designated for Scelio baoli Risbec, S. corion Nixon, and S. pulchripennis Brues. Known hosts are eggs of grasshoppers in the family Acrididae (Orthoptera). The electronic version of this paper contains numerous hyperlinks that make use of biodiversity informatics standards to reference supporting data.
