Abstract: An updated checklist of the family Simuliidae from India is presented. A total of 79 species of Simulium belonging to eight different subgenera are listed. Eleven species that were not reported in the previous checklist are added here. The present list contributes to a better understanding of the diversity of Simuliidae in India, as well as the impact of Simulium species on the public health of this mega-diverse country.

A new species of Simulium (Gomphostilbia) (Diptera, Simuliidae) from Thailand, with a key to identify females of 14 species of the Simulium varicorne species-group https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/77428/ ZooKeys 1083: 1-12

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1083.77428

Authors: Wichai Srisuka, Kittipat Aupalee, Yasushi Otsuka, Masako Fukuda, Hiroyuki Takaoka, Atiporn Saeung

Abstract: Simulium (Gomphostilbia) khelangense sp. nov. is described on the basis of females, collected by a sweeping net in Lampang, Phitsanulok and Chiang Mai Provinces, Thailand. This new species is placed in the S. chumpornense subgroup of the S. varicorne species-group in the subgenus Gomphostilbia Enderlein by having the antenna with eight flagellomeres, pleural membrane bare, and female subcosta lacking hairs. It is similar to S. kuvangkadilokae Pramual & Tangkawanit from Thailand in the same subgroup but is barely distinguished from the latter species by the head width relative to the greatest width of the frons and length of the labrum relative to the clypeus. A genetic analysis using the COI gene sequences similarly shows that S. khelangense sp. nov. is most closely related to S. kuvangkadilokae, with a genetic distance of 1.23–2.81%. A revised key to identify females of 14 species of the S. varicorne species-group is provided.

Twenty-one new species of the Simulium (Gomphostilbia) asakoae species group (Diptera, Simuliidae) in Thailand, with their genetic relationships https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/51298/ ZooKeys 950: 51-152

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.950.51298

Authors: Hiroyuki Takaoka, Wichai Srisuka, Masako Fukuda, Atiporn Saeung

Abstract: Females and males reared from pupae, their pupal exuviae and cocoons, and mature larvae of the Simulium (Gomphostilbia) asakoae species group from various localities in Thailand were morphologically examined. A total of 25 species was identified, including two of four known species (Simulium asakoae Takaoka & Davies and S. chiangdaoense Takaoka & Srisuka), one newly confirmed species (S. myanmarense Takaoka, Srisuka & Saeung, originally described from Myanmar), one newly transferred species (S. inthanonense Takaoka & Suzuki formerly of the S. ceylonicum species group), and 21 new species. Descriptions of all 21 new species are given, and the first full description of the male of S. inthanonense, together with the revised descriptions of its female, pupa, and larva, is also provided. Keys to identify all 27 members of this species group from Thailand are given for females, males, pupae, and larvae. The genetic relationships of all but one species were resolved using COI gene sequence-based analysis. All 26 species were divided into nine subgroups, I–IX, each consisting of two, one, four, nine, one, three, two, one and three species, respectively.

Simulium reptans (Linnaeus, 1758) and Simulium reptantoides Carlsson, 1962 from the Balkan Peninsula https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/49306/ ZooKeys 922: 141-155

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.922.49306

Abstract: Simulium reptans (Linnaeus, 1758) and Simulium reptantoides Carlsson, 1962 are two species of the Simulium reptans group whose distribution is unclear because of their confusing taxonomy and systematics. Their genetic variability is well known for populations in northern and central Europe and shows that both species have two forms; however, the genetic variability of these species in southern and eastern Europe is unknown. To identify the status of these two species in southeast Europe, mtDNA was extracted from 19 individuals from 12 localities across the Balkan Peninsula. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the existence of two species with 7.38–7.94% divergence. Each species was comprised of two clades, with 2.31% and 1.43% interclade divergence for S. reptans and S. reptantoides, respectively. This study revealed the presence of both species across the Balkans and that S. reptans occurs in this area in only one form (S. reptans B), while S. reptantoides is found in two genetic forms (A and B).

Checklist of the family Simuliidae (Diptera) of Finland https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/4042/ ZooKeys 441: 91-95

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.441.7600

Authors: Jari Ilmonen

Abstract: A checklist of the family Simuliidae (Diptera) is provided for Finland and recognizes 56 species. One new record has been added (Simulium latipes) and one name sunken in synonymy (Simulium carpathicum). Furthermore, Simulium tsheburovae is treated as a doubtful record.

A new species of Simulium (Nevermannia) (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Chiang Mai, Thailand https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/2279/ ZooKeys 89: 57-70

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.89.761

Authors: Hiroyuki Takaoka, Wichai Srisuka

Abstract: Simulium (Nevermannia) maeaiense sp. n. is described on the basis of female, male, pupal and larval specimens collected from Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. This species is assigned to the feuerborni species-group of the subgenus Simulium (Nevermannia), and is distinctive among this species-group inthe female cibarium furnished with numerous dark minute conical processes on the lower part, the female genital fork with a strongly sclerotized horizontal bar on each arm, and six long pupal gill filaments arising nearly at the same level from the common basal stalk and lying in a horizontal plane. These characteristics separate this new species from all the known species of the feuerborni species-group. Identification keys to seven species (six known plus one new) of the feuerborni species-group reported from Thailand are provided for females, males, pupae and mature larvae.
