DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1111.77413

Authors: Mauricio Ramírez-Carmona, Rafael Barba-Álvarez, Atilano Contreras-Ramos, Gerardo Rivas

Abstract: Mejicanotrichia Harris & Holzenthal, 1997 is a small genus of Hydroptilidae (Trichoptera), which consists of seven species, six of them distributed in Mexico, and one more in Guatemala. Larval descriptions of only two species (M. blantoni and M. estaquillosa) were previously known, as well as only females of three species (M. blantoni, M. estaquillosa, and M. tamaza) previously described. The present study provides descriptions of the larvae of M. harrisi and M. tridentata, as well as a description of the female of M. harrisi. Identification keys for adult males, known females, and known larvae are also provided. This work aims to incorporate more information into the taxonomy of the genus, its ecology, and facilitate additional characters of potential use in future phylogenetic studies.

The Trichoptera of Panama. XIX. Additions to and a review of the genus Leucotrichia (Trichoptera, Hydroptilidae) in Panama https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/77371/ ZooKeys 1111: 425-466

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1111.77371

Authors: Robin E. Thomson, Brian J. Armitage, Steven C. Harris

Abstract: Prior to 2016, three species of caddisflies in the genus Leucotrichia (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae) were known from Panama. Subsequently, one new species and four new country records were added to Panama’s fauna. Herein, four new species are described (Leucotrichia cortadera sp. nov., L. holzenthali sp. nov., L. luma sp. nov., L. ruiteri sp. nov.) and two new country records added for Panama (L. botosaneanui Flint, 1996, L. hispida Thomson & Holzenthal, 2015). The resulting total of 14 species makes Panama the most species-rich country for this genus. Panama’s species assemblage is most similar to Costa Rica and Mexico. However, the similarities among faunas in all these countries is very low (< 35%). Thus, more new country records are possible with additional collecting. Recent collections (2015–2021) of new caddisfly species and country records in this genus were effected primarily by use of Malaise traps. Our collections also evidenced multiple species from the same collecting site, with seven species each found in both lowland and mid-altitude sites. Investigation of the distribution of Leucotrichia species with altitude reveals a preference by several species for higher altitude locations. Additional Malaise trap collections over extended time periods are needed to verify the validity of all observations and preliminary conclusions made to date.

A preliminary molecular phylogeny of the family Hydroptilidae (Trichoptera): an exploration of combined targeted enrichment data and legacy sequence data https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/85361/ ZooKeys 1111: 467-488

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1111.85361

Authors: Robin E. Thomson, Paul B. Frandsen, Ralph W. Holzenthal

Abstract: Hydroptilidae is an extremely diverse family within Trichoptera, containing over 2,600 known species, that displays a wide array of ecological, morphological, and habitat diversity. However, exploration into the evolutionary history of microcaddisflies based on current phylogenetic methods is mostly lacking. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-concept that the use of molecular data, particularly targeted enrichment data, and statistically supported methods of analysis can result in the construction of a stable phylogenetic framework for the microcaddisflies. Here, a preliminary exploration of the hydroptilid phylogeny is presented using a combination of targeted enrichment data for ca. 300 nuclear protein-coding genes and legacy (Sanger-based) sequence data for the mitochondrial COI gene and partial sequence from the 28S rRNA gene.

Three new species of caddisflies (Trichoptera, Hydroptilidae, Polycentropodidae, Leptoceridae) from Khon Phapheng Waterfall, the Mekong River, Laos https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/66536/ ZooKeys 1055: 149-159

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.1055.66536

Authors: Penkhae Thamsenanupap, Hans Malicky, Chanda Vongsombath, Pongsak Laudee

Abstract: The Mekong River is a hotspot area for freshwater biodiversity, but caddisfly diversity is largely understudied. Three new species of caddisflies from three different families are described and illustrated from Khon Phapheng Waterfall, the Mekong River, Laos; Orthotrichia choengthongi Malicky & Laudee, sp. nov. (Hydroptilidae), Pseudoneureclipsis khonphaphengensis Malicky & Thamsenanupap, sp. nov. (Polycentropodidae), and Setodes karrilai Malicky & Laudee, sp. nov. Orthotrichia choengthongi Malicky & Laudee, sp. nov. can be differentiated from the most similar Orthotrichia triton Malicky 2008 by the specific shape of segment X which is long and tubular, pointed apically and curved inward then immediately upward in dorsal view. Pseudoneureclipsis khonphaphengensis Malicky & Thamsenanupap, sp. nov. differs from the similar P. kaineus Malicky & Bunlue in Malicky et al. 2004 by the shape of the inferior appendages that are usually broad, almost circular in lateral view. Setodes karrilai Malicky & Laudee, sp. nov. is mainly different to S. omphale Malicky & Changthong in Malicky et al. 2004 by the distal part of segment X which has a brush-like process.

Review of New Caledonian species of Oxyethira Eaton, with description of 17 new species, and new records for Hydroptila Dalman and Hellyethira Neboiss (Trichoptera, Hydroptilidae) https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/6047/ ZooKeys 530: 37-90

DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.530.6047

Authors: Alice Wells, Kjell Arne Johanson

Abstract: New Caledonian representation of the cosmopolitan genus Oxyethira Eaton is reviewed, with the description of new species bringing to 26 the total for the genus on the island. The species are referred to three subgenera: Trichoglene Neboiss (11 species), Pacificotrichia Kelley (13 species) and Dampfitrichia Ulmer (one species) and one species is unplaced to subgenus. A key is provided to Oxyethira species of New Caledonia. In addition, new records are given for two otherwise Australian species, Hydroptila losida Mosely and Hellyethira malleoforma Wells. Points marked on a series of small maps of New Caledonia indicate the site or sites at which the species were collected. This final paper in a series of generic revisions brings the hydroptilid fauna of the island of New Caledonia to 60 species, distributed in six genera.
