The species is known only from a single specimen, the holotype. Little is known about its biology, habitat associations, or phylogenetic relationships. It was rediscovered on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi and Henan provinces, China, 117 years after its last record. Detailed descriptions and colour photographs of living specimens are provided along with its ecology, updated conservation notes, and data on sexual dimorphism. A genetic analysis (COI, 16S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) was conducted to assess the phylogenetic relationships among <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Mimopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Cryptopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Scolopendridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Scolopocryptopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Plutoniumidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. <p>Throughout 2018 and 2019, we made intensive biodiversity surveys in the Taiping National Forest Park and Longyuwan National Forest Park, China. It is a region that has only few previous surveys for centipedes but has been highlighted as one of 16 biodiversity hotspots (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Huang et al. 2016</xref>). Our rediscovery of this species has allowed us to reassess its taxonomic status, as well as that of the family <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Mimopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and to give fuller details of this species’ morphological variations and live coloration. <title>Discussion</title>
<p>The taxonomic position of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mimops">Mimops</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has been controversial for many years. Attems (1930) divided scolopendromorphs into blind scolopendromorphs and ocellate scolopendromorphs, the latter containing only a single family, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Scolopendridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, whereas the former includes three eye-less scolopendromorph families (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Cryptopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Plutoniumidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Scolopocryptopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), hence, the name blind clade. The genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mimops">Mimops</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was first classified into the subfamily <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Cryptopinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> of the family <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Cryptopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> by Attems (1930) and then removed from <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Cryptopinae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in a cladistic analysis by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Schileyko and Pavlinov (1997)</xref>. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Shelley (2002)</xref> moved <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mimops">Mimops</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> to the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Scolopendridae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, and subsequently <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Lewis (2006)</xref> restudied the holotype and placed it in a new family, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Mimopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Most recently, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Edgecombe and Giribet (2019)</xref> also treated <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mimops">Mimops</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> as an ocellate scolopendromorph in the monotypic family <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Mimopidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. A critical controversy focused on the presence or absence of ocelli in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Mimops">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="orientalis">orientalis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Attems (1930) and Schileyko treated the “Augenfleck” not as a real eye and placed the species in the blind clade, whereas Lewis, Shelley, and Edgecombe considered it as a single ocellus.
