To confirm the phylogenetic placement of the new species, we carried out a small phylogenetic analysis with three genetic markers: 28S, ND1/16S, and <abbrev xlink:title="cytochrome c oxidase subunit I">COI</abbrev>, with a final alignment of 3314 nucleotides. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian results confirmed their firm placement within <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. <title>Introduction</title>
<p>The Indonesian archipelago stands as one of the biggest biodiversity hotspots of our planet (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Myers et al. 2000</xref>). Stretching from west of the Malay peninsula till the midline of New Guinea, it has biogeographical significance paired with a high number of species still to discover (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ondo et al. 2024</xref>). On the eastern part of the archipelago, just a few kilometres off the New Guinean west coast lies the Raja Ampat Regency, containing about 1500 islands. Batanta is the fourth largest island within that regency and yet avoided the attention of arachnologists. Despite citizen science observations (i.e. iNaturalist) have been recorded, the only actual published data on the arachnofauna is on <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Amblypygi">Amblypygi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Rahmadi and Kojima 2010</xref>), thus not a single jumping spider has been recorded from there (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">World Spider Catalog 2026</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Metzner 2026</xref>). The lack of data is due to the lack of sampling and scientific exploration rather than absence of biota, a clear example of Linnean and Wallacean shortfalls (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Hortal et al. 2015</xref>). Few accounts of the zoological exploration of the island just have been published (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Kovács et al. 2015</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">2025</xref>), giving a nice review what has been achieved in the past two decades or so. Recent collections also resulted in a few jumping spiders as bycatch from the island, so we can report the first glimpses of the salticid fauna of Batanta and surrounding smaller islets Arefi and Birie.</p>
<p>In this paper we use an integrative approach to tackle generic placement challenges, and we first focus on taxa that has been recently worked upon. The genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Simon, 1903 is relatively easy to recognize, due to the large large chelicerae of males, although a full revision of the genus and its close relative <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Thorell, 1892 is still not published. <p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Zhang and Maddison (2013)</xref> had used a different primer for <abbrev xlink:title="cytochrome c oxidase subunit I">COI</abbrev> (C1-J-1718 (forward) <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Simon et al. 1994</xref> and C1-N-2776 (reverse) <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Hedin and Maddison 2001</xref>); thus, our dataset has several fragments with only partial overlap (~300 bp) for that locus, resulting in missing data across the alignment. To compensate the data heterogeneity which may affect phylogenetic inference, we have included sequences of two extra specimens of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="madang">madang</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Zhang &amp; Maddison, 2012 (SAJ304 – three loci, SAJ308 – 16S) as control besides the voucher JXZ143.</p>
<p>PCR was carried out at the Department of Zoology of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, and capillary electrophoresis was done using an ABI 35000xL sequencer (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA) at commercial Biomi Services (Gödöllő, Hungary).</p>
<p>Newly generated sequences were edited using Gap4 of the Staden Package (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Staden et al. 2000</xref>) and deposited in GenBank. Legacy data sequences (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>) were downloaded and combined our own sequences and managed in Mesquite v. 4.02 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Maddison and Maddison 2025</xref>). Each locus was aligned separately in the Mesquite built-in MAFFT multiple alignment tool ‘L-INS-I’ option with the ‘--localpair --maxiterate 1000' command.</p>

            <title>Remarks.</title>
<p>There was a debate about the clear delimitation of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> at the late 1980s. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Prószyński (1987)</xref> suggested that <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is a junior synonym of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, based on the similarities. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Davies and Żabka (1989)</xref> disagreed with Prószyński, despite that they based their arguments on species now belonging to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Parabathippus">Parabathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Zhang &amp; Maddison, 2012. They suggested the separation of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> based on the differences in the structure of the chelicerae and epigyne. Zhang and Maddison (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2015</xref>) showed that both <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> form monophyletic groups and thus argued to keep these genera separate; these authors described the genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Parabathippus">Parabathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> to accommodate about 10 species from South-East Asia and Indonesia previously placed in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>.</p>
<p>Our strategy to place the new species was integrative: we used similarity of morphology to the type species—<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Salticus">Salticus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="forceps">forceps</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Doleschall, 1859—such as the elongated but bulky chelicerae of the male and the shape of the male embolus and <abbrev xlink:title="Retrolateral tibial apophysis">RTA</abbrev>. We used three molecular markers to test whether the morphological placement of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">C.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="horobi">horobi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov., <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">C.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="limagigi">limagigi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov., and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">C.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="wanita">wanita</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. is reinforced by molecular data. Our results are consistent with the results of Zhang and Maddison (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">2013</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">2015</xref>), and we were able to examine two species described over a century ago. Our knowledge on these species is still thin: six of the nine <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Canama">Canama</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species and 25 of the 30 <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species are known from only one or two papers, and often without clear illustrations (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">World Spider Catalog 2026</xref>). The character systems (i.e. chelicera, teeth, and palps) vary widely. Clear diagnoses and testable morphological characters are needed for the placement of species, as the enlarged chelicerae are not sufficient to place species in these genera (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Zhang and Maddison 2012</xref>).</p>

      <title>Acknowledgements</title>
<p>Most of the financial support for the field trips to Batanta came from Róbert Horváth (Ostoros, Hungary), who provided free accommodation and catering in Batanta Island for Tibor Kovács, the fourth author. Róbert Horváth and the Papua Paradise Eco Resort (Birie Island) provided the base camp and helped organise the field trips. Róbert Horváth, Péter Juhász (Debrecen, Hungary) and Előd Kondorosy (Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Keszthely) greatly assisted during the fieldwork. We are grateful to Kristian Sauyai and Ronnius Sauyai (Wailebet, Batanta), our local helpers, for their help during the fieldtrips.</p>
<p>Our study was carried out in compliance with the memorandum of understanding signed by the Research Centre for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The kind cooperation of Eszter Lazányi-Bacsó and Edit Horváth (Collection of Soil Invertebrates in Department of Zoology, Hungarian Natural History Museum) was essential in our study, Peter Jäger (Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum) kindly has loaned the holotypes of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">Bathippus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dentiferellus">dentiferellus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Bathippus">B.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="seltuttensis">seltuttensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>.</p>
